SKO Petanque Club: Join Our Journey to Championship


SKO Petanque Club is a “new comer” in SKO organization and is slowly gaining popularity amongst staff. It was officially formed on the 29th of July 2009 with membership eligibility from all SKO staff and other PETRONAS OPUs in Miri. It aims to accelerate development of current players, continuously source for new talents, increase competitiveness and subsequently elevate the sport standard in SKO. The club proved to receive good support from SKO Management when it was granted with a 6 tournament standard pits constructed inside SKO compound.

The club had recently completed its second “PETRONAS Miri Monthly Medal” tournament on 15th May 2010. Three categories played in this tournament were Triple category, Single (Pointing) category and Single (Shooting) category. These three categories tested participants on teamwork, strategies and specific skills.

Earlier this month, the club had sent 10 teams to participate in “Pertandingan Triple Petanque Siri Ke-2 Pesta Miri 2010” held near Miri Indoor stadium on the 1st and 2nd May 2010. The tournament received 54 participations from all over Malaysia and Brunei. The SKO teams showed remarkable performance throughout the tournament with one of the teams qualifying to the semi-final round. With the showcase of its talents; SKO team gained good reputation in the Petanque arena not only in Sarawak but also in Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia. Another external tournament will be the upcoming Brunei International Invitation which is scheduled to be held mid July 2010 and is expected to receive participation from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.

On top of active participation in external tournaments, the club will continue to organize internal tournaments amongst club members and between PETRONAS OPUs to improve skills, competitiveness and establishing wide pool of players in preparation for next Borneo games. Teamed-up with PHM club; the club also promotes Petanque sport as an alternative recreational activity for staff to promote healthy lifestyle in both competitive and networking environment.
